Honolulu International Airport

A Hawaiian Airlines Jet Departing from Los Angeles for Honolulu International Airport...

Arriving in Honolulu

Some transpacific flights fly directly to the neighbor islands. However, most visitors arive at Oahu first, even if you plan to visit other islands during your stay. Honolulu International Airport (888-697-7813) is located on the South Shore of Oahu near Pearl Harbor, west of downtown Honolulu and Waikiki. It's 9 miles, or about a 20 to 30 minute drive away from Waikiki. Honoloulu International is a large but easily navigable airport.

Main Overseas Terminal

All mainland flights arrive in the Main Overseas Terminal. The baggage claim area is on the ground level. After collecting your bags, exit to the palm-lined street where you can pick up taxis, Waikiki shuttles, and rental-car vans.

Island Hopping

If you're catching a neighbor-island flight, walk to the large Interisland Terminal serving Aloha and Hawaiian Airlines (walk takes about 15 minutes) or hop on the Wiki-Wiki Bus, a free airport shuttle that links the terminals (you'll recall from a previous blog entry that wiki-wiki means "quick" in Hawaiian). I usually prefer the walk after being parked in an airline seat for hours.

Aloha ~
