Beloved Hawaii (Hawaii Aloha) is one of the most endeared Hawaiian songs of all time. Written by The Reverend Lorenzo Lyons (Makua Laiana), the song was taken from an old hymn by James McGranahan called "I Left It All With Jesus." The song is a local classic, and it is sung together as a closing song at Hawaiian gatherings with the holding of hands, swaying with the music, and holding hands up high at the end.
Lorenzo Lyons or "Makua Laiana" was born in Coleraine, Massachusetts in April 1807. An ordained Congregationalist minister, he spent the majority of his life dedicated to the native Hawaiians. He was fluent in the Hawaiian language, and he composed lots of poems and hymns of which "Hawai'i Aloha" was his most famous - sung to the tune of "I Left it All With Jesus."
